Crop fixes R5 bug
February 13th, 2022
Ever since I upgraded my Canon R5 to the latest 1.5 firmware, I have had issues with crashing. After a while I tracked it down to touching the eye focus after I had let the camera go to sleep. A workaround accidentally presented itself when I saw that touching simple focus, the issue would be avoided. Problem is I kept doing it at really inconvenient moments and missed good shots.
Friday when I was out I met a photographer with the same issue who had solved it using the 1.6x crop factor that is available for the Canon R5. You can access this setting labeled Cropping factor on the Red menu 1 (Obscure I know but for R5 people it will make sense). Voila, the problem went away.
I stayed away from the 1.6x crop factor because I wanted all the 45 megapixels and have used the telexextender instead. After some research I found this Youtube article where he shows the results which are excellent. Crop 1.6x As you might expect the combination of 1.4 extender and 1.6 crop produces the least desirable result. However the idea that I no longer have to take time to put on extender when I can use the crop instead is very appealing.
The swan pictures are of this lovely creature looking for and finding food very close to my viewing platform. There was lovely light and a beautiful subject on a bright day with wonderful thin clouds.
