Why Mammals?

My mammal photography is about the challenge of find an elusive subject in nature in the right light and in an interesting viewpoint. There is something magical about finding a mammal and capturing a photograph to record that moment. Sometimes it take a long time to wait for a mammal to come into an interesting pose.

Mammals require a dedication of time to learn the right place and time to go to view the animal safely for both myself and the subject. I follow the advice of one of my mentor’s that no photograph is worth the well being of the animal I am photographing.

I am especially drawn to the challenge of capturing a mother with her young. This is about finding the right time to be there and waiting. I often have to wait long periods of time while driving in the right location. Sometimes there is a rare moment where you just are in the right place at the right time.
