Big Fish

March 24th, 2022

Pied billed grebes smallow their prey whole. It is quite the sight to see a huge fish going down a bird’s throat. Their ability to do this is an amazing thing to see. The bird puts their head back and the bird moves down their throat until it is gone.

A pied billed grebe often catches a very large kind of fish that the bird cannot immediately consumed. The fish in these pictures has features that would kill the bird if the fish were swallowed alive. I know this detail from talking with another photographer.

On this day the pied bill grebe caught the fish and moves around the area in front of me. The fish writhed around and struggle. Several times the fish moved enough to escape and the bird would catch it again.
