A really big fish story

March 10th, 2023

I was standing on a view platform waiting to see if the eagle took a meal. There is sometimes a long delay. The birds often sit in the trees and nothing happens. Juvenile bald eagles make swoops to try to get their prey with no success. Sometimes it happens as soon as I get there.

I was on the platform with another photographer who spotted a pied bill grebe with a very large fish. It is nice to have another pair of eyes when you are looking for one thing and then find another. There is also the fun of talking with someone while you wait which adds to the experience. Over time you get to know different people that share the same passion for bird photography.

This bird had several challenges. The bird had found a fish that was almost too large to handle. There were also several other birds who wanted the fish. A pursuit began around the area with featured struggles to handle the fish as well as many successful moves to avoid the other birds. In the end the bird swallowed the fish whole.
