Yellowstone Bison

November 30th, 2022

My trip to Yellowstone this year had many memorable features. There was snow everywhere bringing its unique character to the surrounding landscape and road. The temperatures were never warmer than 10 degrees. And there were the bison traveling, resting, and eating throughout our drive experience.

Many times we were surrounded by bison on the road as we drove. They would brush up against the van on both sides. They would hang out on the road seemingly content to stay there all day. At one point they were hanging out on the only bridge we could take out of the park. These animals seemingly have no fear and you have to respect their size and show patience. I didn’t find this very hard because these magnificent animals are a treat to see in the snow.

Most of the time, we just drove by and admired the bison and didn’t stop for photography. Sometimes the bison were in bad light where they just appeared as dark objects on the snow. On other times there was no safe place to stop. Very hard to be near these mammals as with very little effort you could find yourself exposed near an animal of incredible bulk that could easily injure you.

Finally we found a good pull off near a herd where we knew they would be crossing the road. The light was bright enough to capture the details in the fur. It was a wait of several hours for the individual members of the herd to cross the road. These were the moments when I caught the images shown here.
