What makes a photograph

I had a new friend reach out and ask me a question that gave me some pause. What makes a photograph for me?

I need to do at least one print a week with my printer. The ink can get clogged and if you don't it can be a real pain to fix. This sometimes leads to needing a brand new print head which is almost the cost of the printer.

For the first 2 weeks after the accident, I didn't even try. The effort of getting to and from without touching the floor with my leg was too intense and scared. Would I accidentally hurt my leg more? Then I got back to the routine. For the first 2 months hoping around and using my rolling cart. Then on two legs once I got the approval for that. Always with crutches.

Today I was able to walk around my office unassisted. My leg still aches as I do it but I have my balance back. A victory as I have started to think and express about it.

So what makes a photograph for me? Why do a print one image and not another? I look for good focus and a subject prominent in the image just like most photographers. But even more important to me is that I emotionally connect with the moment it was taken.

In the movie Kodachrome, the father of the main character is a photographer and he says something that resonates with me so much. I remember every photograph I have taken. I remember how I felt. I remember the place where I was. I even often remember the challenges getting to it.

Right now I need prayers because I want to go on a trip to do more photography in the woods of Montana. It requires me to hike 2 miles there and back with my gear. It will be June 11th when I leave. I am not able to do it now but with God's help I will.
