Whales and Orcas

September 18th, 2025

Orcas and Whales today. Everyone was using the Canon 100-500 lens which really made it easy to photograph the animals which varied from distant to really close. In one case (the first picture) the whale turned on his/her side right next to the ship. All I remember was an impression of fins and head, I just kept shooting and got this incredible photograph which I have never seen before. One photographer captured a shot of the whales tongue which was pretty awesome.

Last time there were many whale tails which were great but this time we got some different behavior with the whales raising their heads which was awesome. We even saw some breaches which I was unable to get but awesome to see.

The orcas were next. They playfully swam around us and then would dive deep and appear somewhere off in the distant, Our boat pilot would then proceed to follow and we would follow the same process again. Like the whales, the calm sea and silence allowed us to spot the orcas quickly when they rose above the water. One thing that helped was that first one would rise, I would move my camera to focus in that area and multiple orcas rose in turn. This offered us many opportunities to capture them in our cameras.
