South Sawyer Glacier and Icebergs
September 19th, 2025
On this day we proceeded up a water channel to reach the South Sawyer Glacier. The waterway became increasingly filled with ice from the Glacier. Around 1 in 10 of the icebergs had deep blue color. This happens when the iceberg has turned over. We found a lovely collection of ice.
Everyone on the ship kept a look out for icebergs. Someone would call out ice and we would all rush outside. The best approach was to wait until the ice was parallel to the back deck and then photograph the ice with interesting backgrounds. The challenge was to find an interest pattern on the ice. I was amazed by the degree to which the icebergs changed in character as we moved past them.
It was really nice to have a warm space to sit in while we waited for the next iceberg. The ship had a large living room with comfortable couches and chair which made the process of waiting easier. At one point we saw other ships where people had to sit crowded on the top deck which was open to the cold air and wind. I was so grateful to not have to take the whole trip out in the cold.
