Semiahmoo Spit
October 26th, 2024
After work today, we drove up to Semiahmoo Spit. It was cloudy and the tide was at the high point. A great time to look for birds along the water. The birds are crowded near the water edge and easier to find and photograph. The only challenge was finding places where the birds were undisturbed by walkers and their dogs.
I first came upon surf scoters in the water near the parking lot to the left. There were a couple males looking for food. They would periodically dive down to find food. I never captured them with something in their mouth but they kept looking.
Along the shoreline, I found a few killdeer. Simply walking towards them made the scatter. The best way to get closer was to walking away from the shore and to the edge of the beach. This afforded them more space and thus allowed me to get several images of them closer up.
I found the biggest surprise shots on the way back to the parking lot among the trees. There were house finches wandering through the trees and bushes. They were hidden behind brush and so it was hard to photograph them. Finally light opened up between the clouds and revealed a male house finch perched for me. A nice way to end the photography day.
