Return to Iverson Spit
May 31st, 2025
This week has been a gradual process of getting better and stronger at walking. I started doing a mile walk every morning wearing sneakers. By the end of the week I was doing the same thing with my hiking boots. This is all good progress towards my goal of getting out with my camera gear again.
Along the way I left leg got a good deal of irritation from the walking and sitting. My left leg was significantly larger than my right. We were able to mitigate that with massage by my wife to draw the blood away from my left foot and calf. A couple times a day. I ordered Compression socks and wear them when I am sitting at my desk during work. Those two things helped a lot.
By this morning, I felt strong enough to walk a mile with my 600mm mounted to my camera. Not an easy thing to do. The weight was a challenge and I was back to using my cane to steady myself on steps and uneven areas of the trail. I had good success and wasn’t needing the cane for almost all of the walk.
In the first few minutes, my wife spotted the killdeer moving along the water near us. The bird was at a good distance for photography. I really like the reflection in the water beneath the bird.
The cedar waxwing was a nice surprise, this bird posed for me for several minutes. I was really glad my arms are still up to the task of holding up the camera to shoot. It was even more pleased to see resulting images came out sharp.
The Purple Martin wasn’t as much a surprise as a welcome sign that spring is here. There are several bird houses setup for them along the trail on pylons. We knew they were there but had not seen them until today. Lots of help from them posing for me to get the pictures here.
On the way out, my wife spotted a great blue heron in a tree. I only had a few seconds to aim and shoot. The result images happened in the space of less than 30 seconds.
