Otter Sibling meal

January 22nd, 2023

I got up on a cold foggy morning to go to my favorite local park to find what was there for me. The drive to the park was a dim and low lighted with little to no detail. I was unsure that I was going to get more than a walk out of the morning. You never know until you try so had to hope for something interesting. Sometimes this works out and sometimes it doesn’t but I get a good walk out of it.

I wandered the board walks and found many different ducks out but little of interest other than a peaceful day walking the area. Then I spotted some common merganser males fishing on the other side of the bay. With this in mind I walked over to the other area.

By the time I got over to the mergansers, they were gone so I stayed around and photographed some local ducks and talked with some of the other photographers. We talked about cameras and gear and enjoyed the morning until all of the sudden something special happened.

There were a group of river otters struggling with a carp. The were situated on a warning buoy to keep boaters out of the wildlife area. They were having a lot of trouble with it as it moved. Several times the fish fell back off the buoy but they kept bringing it back up. Then there was the issue of getting into the fish which took a while. The resulting images tell a wonderful story of perseverance that kept me riveted until one of the otters held up the remains triumphantly.
