Merganser Display

There were a large number of mergansers in the water today. I have seen both males and females at different times, but never at the same time. Today was different, there were both males and females together. The birds were spread over the water in front of me swimming around the area.
At one point a single female became separated from the others. I am not sure why. There didn’t seem to be a plan for why. The bird proceeded to clean her feathers and create huge splashes. I don’t normally get to see that so it was a treat to see. It is moments like this that make the waiting worth it.
After she was done washing, there was a wonderful display of the sight of this bird. The beauty of her wings spread as she rises up out of the water so you can see all of her. The late afternoon light caught the feathers just right so you could see every detail. This was a wonderful memory to take home with me.
