Eagle Snatch and Grab
June 6th, 2022
There is a beach with an oyster bed that is exposed at low tide. There is a species of fish that gets caught in the oyster bed and exposed to predators. Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons seem to consider the females especially tasty. When these fish spawn in may and June, there is a rare opportunity to capture the birds capturing and consuming these fish.
I got to the beach area just as the tide was going out. As the water receded, the oyster bed became more visible and the bald eagles started finding and catching fish. It was quite a sight to see the bald eagles fighting over territory here.
One sub-adult bald eagle was particularly prominent to me. The eagle made several flights to catch fish. On one occasion I was able to capture the sequence of the bird approaching and then catching the fish. You can see it in the talons as the fish is carried away.
