Cooper’s Hawk

August 5th, 2026

The last few times I have been to Iverson Spit, I have not encountered many birds. Weather has been a bit windy and on this particular day I had both wind and threatening stormy weather. On my way out of the area, the rain came almost like nature had waited for me to get to my car before opening up. Strange because my time on the trail was sandwiched between light rain on my windshield and a full out rain shower on the way home.

I was startled to see two cooper’s hawks wheeling around the air nearby. The birds were almost doing a dance in the area for several short moments that were hard to follow with my camera. They didn’t give me enough time to photograph them, just happened too fast and I was on a slower shutter speed. One of the birds briefly landed on a branch. I was given a short scrutiny as the bird looked directly at me, looked around and then flew off.
