The Olfactory Ritual
There is nothing quite like watching a full-grown, majestic male bison move with absolute purpose across the Yellowstone landscape. They don't casually wander; every heavy step feels intentional.
On this particular afternoon, my lens tracked a massive bull as he split from the surrounding grasses and headed straight for a worn patch of exposed dirt. What followed was a classic, raw display of bison behavior—and a spectacular sequence to capture in camera.
First came the preparation. The bull stepped directly into the dirt patch and deliberately urinated on the spot. While this might seem strange to human onlookers, this is a crucial olfactory ritual for bison. By scenting the soil, bulls leave behind important chemical markers that communicate their health, strength, and presence to any other bison moving through the territory.

Kicking Up the Earth
As soon as the groundwork was laid, the real action began. The massive animal threw his weight down into the dirt, kicking his legs skyward and rolling energetically from side to side. This behavior—known as wallowing—is pure theater through a telephoto lens.
Within seconds, the force of his massive frame pulverized the dry earth, sending a thick, billowing cloud of dust exploding into the afternoon air. Wallowing serves a dual purpose: it helps soothe the skin by shed-coating and deterring biting insects, and it acts as a physical demonstration of power.

Sinking into the Golden Haze
As quickly as the energetic rolling began, it stopped. The massive bull came to a rest, sitting upright directly in the center of the pulverized earth he had just kicked up.
This final moment was perhaps the most beautiful frame of the entire sequence. The heavy, billowing dust didn't dissipate immediately; instead, it hung suspended in the afternoon air, caught perfectly by the sunlight. The bull sat completely still, letting the golden haze envelop his massive frame like a protective shroud. He looked like an ancient, untamed fixture of the landscape, breathing heavily as the dust slowly settled back onto his coat.
Capturing this contrasting shift—from the high-velocity energy of the wallow to this serene, almost meditative pause inside a cloud of golden dirt—is exactly what makes tracking these giants so captivating.

Bringing the Moment to Life
The afternoon light combined with the dust really brings out these photographs of the bison wallowing in the dirt.
In our studio, I produced this photograph using our Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 and archival Lucia PRO II pigment inks. When printed on Red River Polar Gloss Metallic paper, the afternoon light gives the dust and the dark coats of the moose an incredible, smooth tonal depth. The metallic paper beautifully handles those subtle midtones and cool reflections, making the scene pop off the paper without losing any fine detail in the fur.
Printed with an elegant white border for safe handling and a classic gallery presentation, this piece is flat-shipped in extra-rigid packaging to protect its premium reflective finish.
