You know something special is happening in Yellowstone when you see a line of brake lights ahead along the park's concrete roads.
Following the line of sight of a few roadside observers, I spotted him—a magnificent Red Fox, his vibrant coat a brilliant contrast against the patches of early winter snow. The only problem was that he was already on the move, steadily wandering parallel to the road but angling away from where we had just stopped our Honda CR-V.
If I wanted the shot, I had to act fast. I stepped out of the CR-V and started walking quickly down the concrete road, using the flat pavement to gain ground and slide into a position well ahead of his natural path. As I pushed my pace to get in front of him, I couldn't help but feel a quiet wave of gratitude. Just last year, an injury had me completely sidelined. Feeling my healed leg hold up perfectly on the trek under the weight of my heavy gear made the moment feel entirely earned.
My hustle paid off. The fox obliged beautifully, slowing his pace and looking directly toward me as he casually strolled alongside the road structure.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. At around 4PM, the late-fall sun dipped just low enough to cast a warm, golden glow through the trees. The light caught the deep amber tones of his fur, while the crisp white snow and dark timber created a striking, minimalist backdrop. It was a flawless reminder of the transition into winter in the high country.
