Wild Horses of Utah
April 4th, 2026
I attended a workshop to see and photograph wild horses in Utah. The tour was organized by Action Photo Tours https://actionphototours.com. The instructor was Wendy Casey. She is a knowledgeable leader who has studied the horses well and quickly got us to fantastic shooting opportunities. Action Photo tours limits attendees to 4 per instructor which was wonderful for getting tips on how to approach photographing the horses. Wendy would give shoot ideas or spot good opportunities. This allowed me to spot and learn to spot how to capture moments that made this a wonderful shoot.
The herd we photographed had around 60 horses which is over half of the 100 current horses in the area. The BLM is keeping the population down with contraceptives delivered to the horses to prevent the horses outnumbering the available resources. Our best photographic opportunities were near watering holes as the horses waited for their turn to get water. At one point we got to witness all 60 horses racing to the water hole at an astonishing speed.
Most of these shot were taken between 1/2000 to 1/1000 at f7.1/f8. The controlling part being the available light. This captured the horses in motion and gave me wonderful photographs that you see here.
