Return to Semiahmoo
February 8th, 2026
This winter has been a challenge with lots of rain and uncooperative tides. Every time the tides at Semiahmoo Spit were right, the rain was intense. Then there were also life things that kept me away. Today there was nothing in my way so we planned to go out. A promised gorgeous morning with high tide did not disappoint.
There were not a lot of birds out when I started. Just distant dots that didn’t bode well. I kept walking hoping for better. At least I would get a good walk in. Fortunately I was not disappointed to see birds closer and even better lovely light.
The first sighting was a lone common loon who caught a fish. I got a series of wonderful shots of this bird as the struggle continued until the fish was gone. Wonderful to watch and very close. Paid to sit down in a favorite spot and wait. The wait was rewarded by these images.
The second sighting were a series of Surf Scoters retrieving shell fish from the bottom and popping up to eat. Wonderful series of images of them eating their reward.
A good morning which I hope means a good birding season to come in march.
