Humpback whales

After breakfast we travelled to an area where there were reported whales. I was excited because I have never gotten whale pictures before. So many times I saw them but never got good photographs of them. Whales were one of my goals for this trip and I was not disappointed. I have done whale watching before but this trip was different for many reasons.
There were no other nearby ships with people on board and the resulting noise. This was important because we could hear the whales breathing as they rose above the waves. The sound is distinctive and allowed us time to respond and photograph the whales before they disappeared under the water again.
The water was calm. Waves are often a challenge with photographing whales. I have missed opportunities in the past because the whale rose behind a wave. The silence in this kind of weather allows you to hear everything, which also helped.
