First Lone Walk

June 8th, 2025

Today a walked a local bird trail on my own. Wore my hiking boots and carried my cane for tougher moments. The hardest moments are still walking down stairs. I don’t know whether it is weakness in my left leg or fear of falling that keeps getting in my head but there is no denying I have challenges with it. On the other hand I am using the cane less and less now.

Carrying my equipment and shooting is still very workable. I use the cane in my left hand and hang the camera and lens off my right hip. A mile and a half of shooting and walking does wear me out. I keep working hard to pay attention to birds while avoiding forgetting about my footing. Not easy but I am learning and improving. I am not complaining, I am doing it and grateful that I can do it now.

Apple Watch chimed in yesterday and told me that my walking gait indicates that I am in danger of falling. I have had a shuffle that I used to do where I would lurch forward when my right leg moved forward. Fortunately that is gone now. Talk about warning me after there isn’t an issue. I am so glad to say I walk normally now. Hopefully my watch will figure that out soon.
