Female Hooded Merganser
February 21st, 2022
This is second part of the merganser blog. Yesterday I shared images I took of the male merganser. Very close by in almost all of my shots with a female merganser. Another beautiful bird who was joining her mate moving back and forth over the water in front of me.
The behavior of the two birds was very similar in terms of photography. They both kept diving for food and it took a while for me to spot the characteristic push back of the head feathers before she would dive for food. A very predictable way to spot her intension to dive. You can see what this looks like in the last image here.
In terms of photography, she is a different exposure from her mate. There is no large white spot to try to avoid overexposing. It is a very good idea to check your exposure when you switch between them.
