Egret Dance

April 14th, 2023

I have observed many different birds over my years of photography. Some sit for long periods of time without any kind of movement. Hours are spent waiting for the bird to venture forth in some way. Others move over water or in the air with a purposeful energy.

The Great Blue Heron slowly move to find a meal. Slowly step by step. Inch by inch. I find it fascinating to watch one of these great blue herons moving looking for food. And then the sudden strike for a meal be it small or large.

Ducks like the Mallard meander over an area swimming from place to place with no discernible purpose. A bird pauses to find some food and then the bird move on for more.

Reddish egrets don’t just move and fly, they dance. It is an amazing performance of water, wind and bird. They flit across the water in a dance of movements. Their wings stretch out over the water. The birds twist and turn in a back and forth pattern which is occasionally interrupted with a lighting strike for food. Then the dance continues.
