Cape Disappointment beach

January 1st, 2022

We drove down to Cape Disappointment on the first day of the year. The weather has been a pain all week with snow clogging up the roads and bitter cold temperatures in the 20s which doesn’t happen here often in Washington state. And then our furnace failed.

On top of all those challenges with snow and temperature, we woke up on the last day of the year with no heat. After a struggle to find someone to come fix the furnace we discovered we needed a new one. We couldn’t leave the house with no furnace, the cats would freeze but even more troubling the pipes would too. I was fortunately able to find someone to install a new furnace. Yes on New Years eve. The trip was on the next morning.

The drive down to Cape Disappointment was uneventful. The roads were virtually completely clear. There were a mild amount of cars on the road. Our truck did great and we didn’t need 4 wheel drive at all.

When we got to the beach, we discovered that the waves were not going to happen that morning. Unfortunate but not the end of the world. After taking a few shots of the lighthouse and hill, I started exploring what spoke to me. The log barrier in front of the area where I typically photograph the waves was changed again by the waters of time. Lots of patterns on the logs caught my attention. I spent an hour photographing the log patterns.

I also found patterns on the sand in the beach. The water was cooperating and there weren’t that many people there walking on the beach so the patterns were pretty pristine. The challenge was minimizing the reflections. I could have used a polarizer but it didn’t occur to me because the cold was getting a bit much and the next two days are wave days. So we headed to our AirBnB.
