Canon RF 85 F1.2

December 8th, 2021

I recently took advantage of the Canon CPS program to borrow a RF 85 F1.2. You simply join the program and send an email to ask for one and I got mine within 2 weeks of my request. I had a week to try it out. The lens arrived packaged well and on time.

I have been on the fence for a while about whether I needed one and could take advantage of one in my photography. The weight was a drawback for me at 3 pounds. For the past few years I have been trying to lighten my bag and this lens bucks that trend.

To be honest the lens does make you work harder carrying it around. I was reminded of the days of my Canon 1d Mark II with a 70-200 F2.8 and the sheer weight of it. I was restricted about where I could hike when I took that equipment with me. So why do I need one? This was the question I kept asking myself.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed working with this lens paired with my Canon R5. The F1.2 aperture frees me from flash and strobe when I wanted to take pictures around my home. My pets were able to be photographed in really low light situations. The out of focus backgrounds really emphasize the subject I was looking at. In this case my pets eyes. The resulting images are very pleasing.

I enjoyed the loaned lens so much that I purchased one of my own. Well worth the cost for the benefit of shooting when I want to much more often. I look forward to using my new lens with some lady subjects very soon.
